The godwits return to New Zealand, and specifically a group return to South New Brighton every February/March from Alaska to feed and build their reserves for their return flight.
The New Brighton Museum was lucky enough to host the launch of Marlene J. Bennett’s book “Yolaska the Godwit” in 2018. The illustration below is an original by the artist Trish Bowles that was purchased by lifelong New Brighton resident and longtime museum committee member Margaret Kelso. Her daughter Shireen Spaull donated it to the museum for everyone to enjoy.
