409 New Brighton Road was the 3rd house built near the Bower Hotel. It was a two-storey house built by David Hamilton in 1860. It had clay walls and totara beams and church services were held by Bishop Harper before the “All Saints Church” s built in Burwood.

The totara beams were brought down the river by row boat. In later years the top storey was removed and the house was roughcast. Around 1928 the Erickson family bought the house from the Hadfields (the second owners) and it passed down through five generations until it was sold in 1973 to the Christchurch Drainage Board. It was eventually demolished in 1994.
